Taxpayers on hook for low-income day care

Please do the math and discover why and where the money goes for low-income day care.

As for the why, yes, the state of Illinois is behind once again in paying the agencies that provide day care for those who are in need.

The when, there is a $300 million IOU to those centers for services provided, and this amount will only keep things afloat until July 1.

The average cost per child is $250 per week. An example to consider: Elgin's Academy of Early Learning cares for 127 children. Only four, yes, four pay the full rate. According to the Daily Herald, 123 do not. They pay only 10 percent of the $250, a deeply discounted rate that translates to $25 per week, $5 per day for "babysitting," and that computes to a bit over 50 cents per hour. Free, free, free for so many at the expense of taxpayers.
