Hands-on science night at Mechanics Grove

Parents and children had a chance to view and participate in students' science exhibits as well as meet professional scientists during the "Science, It's Your Turn to Change the World" program Thursday night at Mechanics Grove School in Mundelein.

The projects included a close encounter with the stars in the Star Lab, an opportunity to program a robot that follows commands, and a chance to fly an airplane in flight simulators.

"Fifth-graders dressed up as famous scientists, and they will be standing on a carousel and talking about their lives," Principal Kathleen Miller said before the event. "This is going to be stellar. It will be out of this world."

Mechanic Grove students from each grade level exhibited scientific investigations and acted as tour guides to answer questions about their science experiments.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Field Museum paleontologist P.J. Mackivick on new discoveries about dinosaurs and ancient life.
