Dangerous winds expected Monday morning

Meteorological spring arrives next week, but the National Weather Service said Sunday that Old Man Winter's grip on the Chicago area is showing no sign of easing.

The weather service issued a wind-chill advisory for the Chicago area which runs from midnight until 9 a.m. Monday, calling for dangerously cold weather. Temperatures Monday morning are expected to range from -2 to -13 degrees, with wind chills measuring between -20 and -25. High temperatures later in the day are forecast between 8 to 14 degrees.

People are advised to bundle up and wear hats and gloves if they must venture outdoors to prevent frost bite and hypothermia.

High temperatures are not expected to venture above freezing the rest of the week. The weather service predicts that Tuesday will top out at around 31 degrees and could feature snow showers and flurries. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, high temperatures will drop to the teens and stay there before conditions slightly improve next weekend.

The weather service cautioned on their website that if someone contracts hypothermia from the extreme cold that they should be warmed up slowly and starting at their body's core. Warming the arms and legs first drives cold blood toward the heart and can lead to heart failure.
