Spotlight Youth Theater

History: Spotlight Youth Theater began as an affiliate of a Christian youth theater organization established in San Diego in 1981. Tom and Bonnie Bienert moved from San Diego to the Chicago area in 1995 and continued here as they added regions. In May 2012, the board of directors chose not to extend the license agreement with the national organization. The local regions became Spotlight Youth Theater, with the mission statement of "Reflecting Christ through Performing Arts."

Programming area: Based in Cary, Spotlight offers classes and productions in 11 locations in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin: DuPage County, Aurora, Kane County, Kenosha, Lake County, McHenry County, Northwest Cook County, Oak Park, Orland Park and Rockford.

Programs: After-school theater arts education classes for ages 5 to 18 and musical productions for ages 8 to 18; two or three fully staged musical productions in each location every school year; weeklong summer camps in all locations

Philosophy: To support success, teach theater, acknowledge God, give respect and encourage bravery in every class, camp and show - core values that aim to build a foundation for kids not only in the time they spend with Spotlight, but for the future

Get involved: Register for classes and summer camps at spotlight.org; students in classes can audition for productions
