Marmion wins 5 matches on 1st day at state

Five of six Marmion wrestlers won their opening matches Thursday at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament at State Farm Center in Champaign while Kaneland went 4 for 4 in its Class 2A matches.

Wrestlers from St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Geneva, West Aurora and Batavia also competed Thursday. They will be back in action Friday with the championship matches set for Saturday.

For the Cadets, junior AJ Jaffe won a 10-2 major decision over Glenbard North's Philip Partipilo at 132 pounds.At 138, sophomore Anthony Cheloni won 5-0 over Niles Notre Dame's Jake Barzowski, and at 160, junior Trace Carello won a 10-3 decision over Mt. Prospect's Tanner Strobel.

Marmion junior Riley DeMoss won a 5-1 decision over Lincoln-Way East's Brian Burns at 170. Junior Nathan Traxler won his match at 182 by technical fall at 4:38 over Evanston's Zach Warhus.

Junior Michael Callahan lost by fall at 5:05 to Addison Trail's Anthony Metallo.

St. Charles East's Keone Derain won a 3-2 decision over Marist's David Kasper at 152 while teammate Ramon Lopez lost an 18-4 major decision to Deerfield's Brady Glantz at 170 and junior Anthony Rubino lost by fall to Harlem's Dylan Elmore in 5:02 at 126 pounds.

West Aurora also had three wrestlers compete. Isaac Jacquez won by technical fall at 113; Carlos Jacquez earned a 7-3 decision at 120 over Danny Madonia from Conant. Alex Gonzalez lost at 152.

Geneva senior Austin Chaon defeated Plainfield South's Daniel Saracco 4-2 at 195.

Batavia junior Dylan Uzumecki lost a 6-4 decision at 220 to Glenbard North's Dillon Warnecke, and St. Charles North sophomore Kolbe O`Brien lost a major decision at 106.

In Class 2A, Kaneland junior 145-pounder George Strang won 7-4 over Rich East's Kendall Miller, sophomore Riley Vanik won a 15-4 major decision over Carmel's Nathan Morris at 160, sophomore Colin Gussman won 18-15 at 170, and at 182 junior Austin Parks won 9-6 over Hubbard's Brandon Pettis.
