Wauconda FBLA students teach financial literacy skills

Submitted by Wauconda High School FBLA

The Wauconda American Enterprise Project Team is composed of high school FBLA business students who believe that financial literacy skills should be taught to younger generations. This will lead to informed economic decisions throughout a student's entire life.

The American Enterprise is led by Davis Heck, Emily Holmes, and Lexi Meyer. Together, they strive to educate younger students about saving money early in life.

The team has visited fourth- and fifth-grade classes at Robert Crown to present on needs vs. wants and spending, sharing, and saving. At Wauconda High School, microeconomic topics like consumer sovereignty, entrepreneurship, and supporting local businesses were taught.

Michael Barbini from Libertyville Bank and Trust Company helped with the high school presentations by talking about personal financing and the differences between debit cards and credit cards.

Despite the mandatory course in the fourth-grade curriculum and the senior year class, Applied Economics, many students never fully understand personal finance. The team created an interactive presentation that helped students reassess their prior knowledge, and elaborated on new topics.

In order to successfully teach the classes, the leaders formed a committee. Committee members assisted in presentations and promoted a communitywide understanding and support for the American Enterprise System. In addition to their presentations, the committee spread awareness throughout the community by passing out fliers to local community businesses on American Enterprise Day, Nov. 15, 2014. The fliers promoted shopping at local businesses.
