Learn what it takes to get ideas into laws

4-H members will debate bills at Illinois capitol

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — 4-H members in Illinois will learn how ideas become law during a mock debate in the Chambers of the Illinois House of Representatives March 27 and 28 in Springfield.

Delegates will debate mock bills using the same process used by real legislators in the Illinois House and Senate, including use of the House microphones and voting buttons to determine the fate of various bills.

4-H members who were at least 14 years of age by Sept. 1, 2014 may register online at go.illinois.edu/4hgreatdebate by March 13.

The $110 registration cost includes lodging at the State House Inn, three meals and all program costs.

Delegates may run for many leadership roles during the conference, including Speaker of the House and Clerk of the House.

Delegates will sharpen their persuasive speaking skills while they learn more about the state legislative process, said Deb Stocker, University of Illinois Extension specialist, 4-H youth development, as well as meet 4-H members across the state.

Illinois 4-H strives to help youth learn skills for living. University of Illinois Extension provides 4-H programs in every county in Illinois. Illinois 4-H aims to impact the lives of 250,000 youth each year through sustained learning clubs and groups and short-term programming.
