'Gen Silent' film explores lives of elderly LGBTQ Feb. 27 in Geneva

The award-winning 2010 documentary "Gen Silent" will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 110 S. Second St.

This documentary by Stu Maddux reveals the plight of LGBTQ elders in facilities where they may face discrimination by staff and bullying by other seniors. The film asks six LGBT seniors if they will hide their friends, their spouses - their entire lives in order to survive in the care system. Their surprising decisions are captured through intimate access to their day-to-day lives over the course of a year.

The film won the jury award and audience award for best documentary at the Sacramento Film and Music Festival. It also earned the audience awards at the Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival and Charlotte Film Festival.

The film is sponsored by the UUSG Interweave Group. For more information about Interweave, contact the group facilitator Lynn Steele at interweave.leader@uusg.org.

The film is part of the free monthly fourth-Friday film program that is sponsored by the Social Justice Team of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. The public is encouraged to register at uusg.org/friday-flicks/ to receive email notices of future programs.
