Carmel's Williams will pitch in at Augustana

Carmel Catholic junior Skylar Williams has decided to continue his pitching in Rock Island.

Williams, a 6-foot, 175-pound side-arming right-hander, has announced he will attend Augustana College and play for coach Greg Wallace's highly successful Viking baseball program.

As a junior, Williams helped coach Dann Giesey's Carmel program to a 24-10-1 record last spring. The Corsairs finished third in the East Suburban Catholic Conference with an 11-5 mark.

During the summer and fall, the Libertyville native competes for the Mundelein-based Northern Knights. Last year he posted a 10-2 record with an ERA of 2.02.

Williams, who will major in environmental studies or business administration, is joining an Augustana program that claimed the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin title in 2014 and finished 29-12 overall.

Wallace achieved his 500th collegiate win in 2012 and in 17 seasons at his alma mater, has a record of 497-229 (.685).

The Vikings have reached the 25-win plateau 15 times in the last 16 years and have made NCAA Division III playoff appearances in 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2013.

Men's swimming

Lewis sophomore Bryan Wiener (Mundelein) earned the Flyers a second individual title in as many days when he won the 100 backstroke at the Great Lakes Valley Conference swimming and diving championships.

His 47.11 performance qualified for NCAA 'A' standards and is a GLVC meet record. The title is Wiener's third career conference championship. He won the 50 freestyle and 100 back at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships.

"Bryan's first-place finish was obviously a highlight," said Lewis swimming coach Roger Karns.

In the final race of the day, the 400 medley relay, Lewis finished less than half a second from its first relay conference title in 10 years.

Wiener was part of the relay that swam a time of 3:15.67, good for NCAA B status.

It also broke the Lewis school record by four seconds. However, Drury topped the Flyers with a time of 3:15.21.

• Six north and northwest suburban swimmers helped Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship.

The six swimmers are freshman Kirk Dickson (Grayslake Central), junior Matthew King (Libertyville), Patrick King (Libertyville), sophomore Matt Schulstad (Buffalo Grove), freshman Austin Salisbury (Warren) and freshman Dan Skiroock (Schaumburg).

Patrick King took first place in the 200 butterfly (1.51.77) just out-touching Schulstad (1.52.23), who finished second.

Salisbury finished fifth (1.55.97) and Matthew King eighth (1.58.51) in the same event.

Patrick King also was a member of the first-place 800 freestyle relay which set a CCIW record.

Schulstad finished second in the 100 butterfly (49.98) while Patrick King took third (50.27).

Matthew King took third in the 500 freestyle (4.40.17) and the 1650 freestyle (16.00.81).

His time in the 1650 freestyle broke his own school record.

Matthew also holds two other Rose-Hulman school records in the 500 and 1000 freestyle.

Matthew and Patrick King and Matt Schulstad were all named to the all-conference team for those performances.

Dickson was a member of two second-place relays - the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay. He also earned all-conference honors.

Salisbury also finished ninth in the 400 individual medley (4.16.13) and Patrick King was fifth in the 200 free style (1.44.65). Schulstad took fourth in the 200 individual medley (1.56.74).
