Two shot in Wheeling drug deal; 3 in custody

A drug deal that went wrong resulted in two people shot in Wheeling Tuesday night, and three people are in custody, police said.

Based on their initial investigation, two groups of people arranged to meet on the 1100 block of West Dundee Road to buy and sell drugs, police said. But around 7 p.m. shooting broke out near the Walgreens at 1199 W. Dundee Road, according to a news release.

“It appears the drug deal went bad and multiple subjects drew handguns and shot each other,” the release said.

When police arrived they found one man with a gunshot wound. About 40 minutes later a second person with gunshot wounds arrived at a local hospital.

Both injuries were non life-threatening and the victims are now in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, but Wheeling police said three suspects are in custody. Charges have not yet been filed, but police are working Wednesday with the Cook County State's Attorney's office.
