More than $500,000 in jewels stolen from Schaumburg store

Schaumburg police are looking for two men who walked into a jewelry store during regular store hours, smashed glass display cases and stole more than $500,000 in jewels.

According to police, at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, two men entered Jared Galleria of Jewelry, 1700 E. Woodfield Road, and started smashing glass display cases with hammers, said Lt. Shawn Green.

The store was open at the time, but there was no interaction between the robbers and the customers or employees, he said.

“It was very quick,” Green said. No one was injured during the robbery.

The thieves stole 63 loose diamonds valued at $427,000 and a number of other gems and mounted stones that the store could not immediately place a value on, Green said.

No one has been charged and on Wednesday afternoon Green said the investigation is ongoing.

Jared, which is in an outer lot of Woodfield Mall, was open for business on Wednesday. Employees said they could not comment and referred questions to their corporate office, which was closed late Wednesday afternoon.

Green said such a large jewel heist is rare.

“It doesn't happen very often around here, thankfully,” he said. “It's a pretty brazen crime and they don't happen very often.
