Addison recipient of insulting bill gets 2 years of free basic cable

An Addison woman who was fuming last week after receiving a bill from Comcast that addressed her by a nasty nickname has accepted the cable company's apology and two years of free basic cable.

Mary Bauer, 63, said she received a call Saturday from the company.

"They apologized for the discourtesy I endured and promised it wouldn't happen again," Bauer said Monday. "As for the service, I'll take it. But you better believe I'll be calling them right back up if I have more problems like I had when this started."

Bauer said her frustrations with the cable giant began in January 2014 when she decided to upgrade her service to high definition. But the new service, she said, kept "crashing" her television.

Bauer said that between January and April 2014 she had to call customer service 39 times, each time requiring a technician visit. She said the tech would often get the service to work only to have it fail as soon as the tech left her home.

She finally canceled the service and went back to watching analog television with no hassles until October.

Bauer said she didn't receive a bill from October to January despite her repeated calls to ensure her service wasn't further disrupted.

When a bill finally did arrive Wednesday afternoon, it was addressed to "Super Bitch Bauer."

"It was degrading and rude, but they've apologized and I accept the apology," Bauer said. "That was what I wanted."

Comcast spokesman Jack Segal maintained that Comcast spoke with Bauer for "nearly 50 minutes" on Friday before reaching a resolution. He declined to comment Monday on the offer extended to Bauer but said Comcast has identified the person responsible.

"We've identified the customer service agent responsible for the name change and that individual is no longer working on behalf of Comcast," Segal said. "In addition, we have worked with our billing partners on additional technical safeguards that will prevent this from happening in the future."
