Illinois officials approve 2 medical cannabis dispensaries

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois officials have awarded two more medical cannabis dispensary licenses.

The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced Friday the retail stores for districts in the city of Chicago.

Curative Health was granted a license in District 41, which is on Chicago's northwest side. Custom Strains was selected as a qualified applicant for District 48, on Chicago's West Side.

The state's Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program requires dispensaries to be registered with the Financial and Professional Regulation Department to acquire marijuana from licensed cultivators.

Once acquired, they act as retail stores for dispensing cannabis, paraphernalia or other supplies, and educational material for qualified patients.

Gov. Bruce Rauner announced on Monday that 18 cultivation centers and 52 retail shops were approved for the new program.
