Oswego man charged with sexual assault of student

An Oswego man has been charged with criminal sexual assault, accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student of his at the Fox Valley Career Center in Maple Park.

Glen C. Baum, 42, was arrested Wednesday in Oswego. He was being held in the Kane County jail on $250,000 bail, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office. His next court date is Feb. 11.

Baum is also charged with possession of child pornography.

Prosecutors said between May 2014 and January 2015, Baum “maintained a sexual relationship” with the victim. The victim's mother saw messages from Baum on the teen's cellphone and notified police.

Baum was a contracted part-time service provider at the job-training center, a regional vocational school operated by Kaneland School District 302.

Kaneland officials were notified Jan. 12 Baum was being investigated. They removed him from campus and prohibited him from having contact with students, and then ended his contract Jan. 14, according to a news release from the district.

District officials do not believe any additional current or former students were involved. They are encouraging parents and students to contact school counselors and social workers to discuss this matter.

Baum taught in the fire-science program, according to the state's attorney's office.

If Baum posts bond, he is to have no contact with the victim, no contact with anyone younger than 18 and no Internet access.
