Illinois Democrats content to wait for Rauner proposals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Democratic lawmakers say their first move in working to fix the state's woeful budget is simply waiting for new Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to lay out his plans.

House and Senate Democrats will seek to protect their own interests and constituencies in negotiations with Rauner. Traditionally, they have sought to protect social services, state workers and Medicaid recipients. And many were ready last spring to support an extension of the income tax increase that expired in January.

But they're keeping their playbook close to the vest as Rauner prepares to give his State of the State speech on Wednesday. He will unveil his budget blueprint later this month.

Political analysts say the Democrats' move is tactical. It could help assure that both parties share the pain of tough budget decisions.
