Park district's maintenance garage burns

A Golf Maine Park District maintenance garage was heavily damaged by a fire Monday evening, fire officials said.

Firefighters with the North Maine Fire Protection District responded to a fire alarm from the building, on the 9000 block of Emerson Street, just after 6 p.m., North Maine District Chief Robert Palffy said.

When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the maintenance garage, a 30- by 50-foot brick structure used to house maintenance equipment, vehicles and tractors, Palffy said.

"There's considerable damage," he said. "When we arrived, we saw smoke coming from the garage. When the first engine company opened the door, they elevated the alarm."

Niles, Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Morton Grove firefighters assisted. No damage estimates were available. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
