Harper College to offer free tax preparation

Despite the snow, slush and frigid temperatures, April 15 really is just around the corner.

To help navigate the often stressful process, Harper College's Learning and Career Center will offer free tax preparation to eligible community members through a partnership with My Free Taxes, Walmart, Goodwill, the National Disability Institute and United Way.

Sessions will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays on February 2, March 2 and April 6. The Learning and Career Center is located at 1375 S. Wolf Road in Prospect Heights.

Volunteer income tax preparers certified by the Internal Revenue Service will meet with individuals and families whose household income in 2014 was $53,000 or less. Those with a household income of $60,000 or less can receive a similar service at MyFreeTaxes.com, powered by H&R Block.

Participants will need a social security or individual taxpayer identification number for each family member and working adult; W-2s, 1099s, 1098s and other forms; a 1095-A if a healthcare.gov marketplace tax credit was received; and other documents.
