Hiring of new Oakton president expected by May

A new president of Oakton Community College is expected to be announced in April or May, the chairman of the board of trustees said Wednesday.

A board-hired consultant, who previously served as the Des Plaines-based college's human resources director, has been collecting resumes from those interested in becoming the school's next president. Current President Margaret Lee announced last year that she would retire when her contract expires in June.

Board Chairman Bill Stafford said a search committee composed of nearly 20 people, including two board trustees, faculty and staff, is in the middle of conducting about a dozen candidate interviews. That committee is expected to narrow the list to three or four finalists for the board's consideration.

The board will interview the finalists in February and March, then make the final hiring decision.

Last September, the college hosted public meetings and posted an online community survey to gauge the characteristics the college's stakeholders want in a new president.

Lee is retiring after 30 years at Oakton - the last 20 of which as president.
