Girls basketball / Lake County roundup

Sophia Way scored a milestone point, and Stevenson's girls basketball team welcomed the return of Taylor Buford to its lineup by beating host Zion-Benton 73-46 in North Suburban Lake Division action Tuesday night.

Buford, who had missed the Patriots' last six games with a sprained ankle, led all scorers with 19 points. Way added 15, including four 3-pointers, in surpassing the 1,000-point mark for her varsity career. Stevenson (21-3, 9-0) also received 11 points from Janine Fajardo and 9 from Ashley Richardson. Buford knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.

Stevenson led 16-13 after one quarter, 34-27 at halftime and 57-38 after three.

Vernon Hills 48, Wauconda 41: Kasey Firnbach scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the visiting Cougars in the North Suburban Prairie contest.

Becky Bahlmann added 9 points and 7 rebounds for Vernon Hills (16-6, 5-3), while Katie Brettmann contributed 8 points and 5 rebounds.

"Wauconda is always tough at home and tonight was no different," Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said. "We played well enough to get a lead and then made some free throws at the end."

Wauconda fell to 7-12 and 2-8 in the division.

"We bounced back nicely after a terrible outing against Grant," Bulldogs coach Jaime Dennis said. "We played hard and challenged Vernon Hills the entire game. We just had too many mistakes on both ends of the court to come out on top. At times we looked great but are still struggling with consistency. Firnbach was just too much for us to handle tonight."

Junior guard Corrina Vaughan led Wauconda with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

"Corrina had a great game for us," Dennis said. "She does a lot for us that doesn't end up on the stat sheet."

Katie Rossetti added 10 points and 5 rebounds for Wauconda.

Grant 58, Lakes 47: Jasmine Sangster poured in a season-high 26 points, as the host Bulldogs cooled off the Eagles in North Suburban Prairie play.
