$1 million bail for Streamwood man charged with sexually assaulting teen

A Streamwood man with a lengthy criminal record was ordered held on $1 million bail Monday on charges that he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.

Juan Torres, 44, a convicted sex offender from the 700 block of Russet Lane, did not appear in court during the hearing before Cook County Judge Joseph Cataldo because he had been hospitalized after an asthma attack, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors say Torres assaulted the 14-year-old about 10 times between July and December 2014. The girl told a teenage cousin about the abuse last fall, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Maureen McGee, but the cousin did not report it to an adult until Torres' accuser informed the cousin she was pregnant. At that point the cousin told another relative, who alerted police, McGee said.

Torres' background includes a 2007 conviction for criminal sexual abuse for which he was sentenced to 30 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Torres was arrested on charges of criminal sexual assault in 2001 but pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and was sentenced to six years in prison, McGee said.

Additionally, Torres was sentenced to 30 months in prison for retail theft in 1993. He was sentenced to two years in prison for aggravated battery in 1991 and three years in prison for a robbery in 1990, McGee said. In 1988, he was sentenced to prison for two years for theft.

Torres next appears in court on Jan. 30.
