Health officials confirm first Michigan measles case in 2015

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - State health officials have confirmed the first reported case of measles in Michigan this year and say it may be associated with a recent outbreak at California's Disneyland theme park.

Department of Community Health spokeswoman Jennifer Smith says Friday that the case involves an Oakland County adult, but adds that an exact connection to the Disneyland outbreak has not yet been determined.

Michigan is now one of seven states reporting the disease. There were five reported last year in Michigan.

Measles is a vaccine-preventable respiratory infection that can result in hospitalization, pneumonia, encephalitis and death. It is characterized by a red, raised body rash.

Some six dozen people - most of them unvaccinated - have been sickened from the outbreak that originated last month at Disneyland.
