First Campton Hills Winter Wonder promises fun, learning

Tired of winter?

The Campton Hills Community Relations Committee wants you to turn that frown upside down at the first Winter Wonders Festival Saturday.

The festival is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Road, and will help raise money for the Corron Farm Preservation Society to eventually restore the 1875 historic Corron Farm barn, which has roof and structural issues.

Jayne Holley, co-chair of the village's Community Relations Committee, said organizers talked last year of doing a winter event.

Holley said the event will provide a mix of fun and educational activities.

"We're trying to have some winter fun, but there's a lot of learning going on as well," Holley said. "We're hoping for 200, 300 people. If we had that many people, we would be thrilled. We're hoping for a good weather day. It depends on how hearty people are because most of the events will be outside."

Highlights include a snowshoe demonstration, a snowball throwing contest, crafts such as assembling bird feeders, guided tours, food and a person portraying "Snow Queen," who will pose for photos with kids.

Admission is $5 a person, or $25 for a family, and includes the bird feeder craft.

"It's something simple the kids can do and take with," Holley said.

Proceeds will go to the Corron Farm Preservation Society, which is working to raise money to restore the barn.

Laurel Garza of the preservation society, said the group has consulted with experts on how to save the dairy barn, which is owned by Campton Township.

The group has not decided on a plan, but a recent survey showed that residents want to save it and believe it is a valuable resource.

"Bottom line, everything comes down to money," Garza said. "We're thankful for anyone who wants to raise money for us. Whether this will do it or not, we don't know. "
