Early Oscars given to sound, projection technology engineers

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A sound engineer and the inventor of digital micromirror technology will receive Oscar statuettes when the film academy's Scientific and Technical Awards are presented next month.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that sound engineer David W. Gray and scientist Larry Hornbeck will be recognized among 58 honorees at a Feb. 7 ceremony celebrating the "sciences" part of the organization's name.

Awards will be given to inventors of camera rigs and digital projection technology, software developers and lens creators.

The ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, California, won't be televised, but some portions will be included in the Academy Awards telecast on Feb. 22.
