Conant keeps pace in MSL West

Conant's girls basketball team remained one game out of first place in the Mid-Suburban West by defeating host Barrington 49-36 on Saturday night.

The Cougars used balanced scoring to improve to 12-2 and 3-1 in the MSL West behind five-time defending champ Fremd (4-0).

Senior guard Lexi Zades and senior forward Haley Anderson each scored 9 points for Conant while sophomore Jorie Wachal and her senior sister Alissa each added 8.

Zades and Jorie Wachal each connected for a pair of 3-pointers while teammate Nireet Dhillon had one.

Conant will face state-ranked Marian Catholic today at 3 p.m. in the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase 2015 at Fremd High School.

Kelly Katis (8 points) and Megan Talbot (6) paced Barrington (7-10, 2-2), which received 3-pointers from Auri Grayson, Lauren Pector and Bri Styczek.

The Fillies had three starters pick up 2 fouls in the first quarter.

"I thought we came out aggressive and played hard," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "Conant is a good team and you can't miss as many easy shots and free throws as we did against a good team.

"I thought Kelly Katis played well and our freshman (5-foot-8 guard Rachel Mori), who got her first start, had a really solid performance."

Wheeling 43, Elk Grove 28: Senior Deanna Kuzmanic (13 points), Melissa Claver (12) and Haley Dammeier (11) led host Wheeling (15-4, 2-2) to the Mid-Suburban East victory.

Dammeier had a pair of 3-pointers while Kuzmanic had one.

Elk Grove (5-10, 0-4) was led by junior guard Taylor Matos (two 3-pointers) and O'Rayn Macavoy, who each had 8 points.

Palatine 40, Hoffman Estates 38: Senior center Monica Masini scored a game-high 17 points and junior Ashley Shapiro added 8 for the visiting Pirates (9-9, 2-2). Katie Conklin (6 points) and Carrissa Multon each had a 3-pointer for the visitors.

Hoffman (4-13, 0-4) was led by Monraia Wilson (12 points), Jennifer Nailor (11) and Erin Hanson (9).

Hanson and Wilson each connected for three 3-pointers while Nailor had two.

Heritage Christian (In.) 75, Fremd 54: Senior Haley Gorecki scored a game-high 24 points against the nationally-ranked Cobbers from Indiana at the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase 2015 at Fremd High School.

Brianna Lewis chipped in 12 points for the Vikings (15-3).

"I have never seen a team shoot like they (Heritage Christian) did," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "They hit nearly every open look they got. Every time we would close their lead down, they had an answer.

"They played amazing and we played OK, and that was not a good combination."

Yates liked that the Cobbers gave his team a test.

"We need to be pushed, and we were in this game," he said. "I am proud of my girls for battling through a less-than stellar performance. I thought we battled all second half."

Fremd meets Crete today at 6 p.m. when the invite resumes.

Morton 53, Leyden 42: Senior guard Alondra Chavarria led the Eagles (6-9) with 17 points while junior Gianna Grande and sophomore Cherish Sepulveda each added 6.
