District 33 preparing for spelling bee semifinals

Roughly 55 students will be participating in the spelling bee semifinals that begin Wednesday, Jan. 14, in West Chicago Elementary District 33.

The top two spellers in the district's Final Bee will be invited to participate in the DuPage County Regional Bee at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Wheaton North High School. The winner of that bee is invited to participate in the spring Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

This year's spelling bee judges and pronouncers include District 33 teachers and administrators, school board members, West Chicago Public Library employees, West Chicago aldermen, Mayor Ruben Pineda and community members.

Spelling bees begin at 7 p.m. in the cafetorium at Leman Middle School, 238 E. Hazel St. The third-grade semifinal is Wednesday, Jan. 14; the fourth-grade semifinal is Thursday, Jan. 15; the fifth-grade semifinal is Wednesday, Jan. 21; the middle school semifinal is Wednesday, Jan. 28; and the Final Bee is Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Spectators are welcome.
