Man hit, killed by train near Cary

A 24-year-old Cary man was struck and killed Friday morning by a commuter train.

Inbound and outbound trains on the Union Pacific/Northwest Line north of Cary were shut down until about 9:45 a.m., officials said.

Police received a report at 6:15 a.m. of a pedestrian trespassing on the tracks about a mile west of the Cary Metra depot. The man was struck near Route 14 and Silver Lake Road, police said.

Train traffic was affected in both directions and commuters were advised to board inbound trains from the Barrington station.

Police said they were told the man was distraught due to "a previous interaction with an acquaintance." Cary, Union Pacific and Metra police and the McHenry County Coroner's office were investigating.
