Renowned musicians to perform at 'Early Music' in Grayslake

Celebrate 2015 with acclaimed musicians Pablo Mahave-Veglia and Seth Carlin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake.

This performance is part of the Early Music Series featuring renowned musicians performing music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

Beethoven's compositional styles reflect the rapid evolution of the piano in the 18th and 19th centuries. Enjoy an archetypal example of Beethoven's monumental middle period, Sonata No. 3 op. 69, the longest and most famous of the cello and pianoforte Sonatas.

This performance by Pablo Mahave-Veglia with Seth Carlin also includes variations on themes by Mozart, including Beethoven's own set on an aria from "The Magic Flute," as well as Helene Liebmann's Grand Sonata, which closes with a set of variations on a theme from "Don Giovanni."

Mahave-Veglia is associate professor of cello at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His repertoire ranges from the early baroque performed on period instruments to contemporary Latin-American composers. Professor Mahave-Veglia performs on a five-string baroque cello made by Chilean Luthier Marcelo Cigna in 1986. He also performs on a late 18th century British cello in restored to period setup by Ian Watchorn in 2005.

Renowned fortepianist Seth Carlin's career began at the age of 9 with a broadcast performance over radio station WNYC, performing a work written especially for him. Since then he has performed with orchestras, including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Philharmonia Baroque, Boston "Pops" and at festivals.

Concert admission is $18 for adults and is available at the door only via cash or check (no credit cards). To inspire early appreciation for the arts, children younger than 16 are admitted free to all Early Music Series performances.

The Byron Colby Barn is at 1561 Jones Point Road in Grayslake, inside the Prairie Crossing conservation community. Free parking is located in the parking lot adjacent to the Barn. Audience members are welcome to bring a bottle of wine to share with friends.
