Huntley falters late against Marian Central

It was a fourth quarter to remember for Marian Central.

It was one to forget for Huntley.

The Hurricanes, who led 28-25 going into the final period, outscored the Red Raiders 18-7 in the fourth quarter to post a 46-32 win in first round action of the Hinkle Holiday Classic hosted by Jacobs High School in Algonquin Saturday night.

"The bottom line is that we have to make shots," said Huntley coach Will Benson. "We have one kid who we can count on to score and that is Connor (Boesch). We need more kids we can count on to score."

The Red Raiders, who didn't want to play a run-and-gun style that Marian Central prefers, had the game at their pace for three quarters

'They certainly slowed down the pace the first three quarters," said Marian Central coach Curtis Price. "I think we had a hangover from our loss to Marist on Friday. The key in the fourth quarter is that we rebounded the ball better, got the ball out to the guards and got the fast break going. We executed much better in the fourth quarter."

The Red Raiders did climb within 2 of the Hurricanes, 31-29, on a putback by Connor Boesch with 6:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Marian Central responded with an onslaught of 13 straight points to seize control of the game.

Senior guard Wyatt Lindell, who didn't score during the first 3 quarters, tallied 9 points including a 3-pointer and junior guard Adam Pischke scored on a pair of layups and the Hurricanes led 44-29 with 2:28 left in the contest.

Marian Central's biggest lead was 16, 46-30, with 1:30 left on a basket by Lindell.

Pischke, who scored 12 in the second half, led Marian Central with 19 points. Lindell, who missed his first 10 shots, was 5-of-5 from the floor in the final quarter and scored all of his 11 points in the last 8 minutes.

"Our game is guard play," said Price. "We finally got Adam and Wyatt going in the fourth quarter. Give our big guys credit for starting the fast break by securing rebounds."

Boesch was the lone Red Raider in double digits with 12 points. He also had 9 rebounds.

Huntley couldn't over come anemic shooting connecting on 12-of-60 from the floor for 20 percent. Huntley, which committed 19 turnovers, made only 1-of-10 from 3-point range.
