Batavia school board hot among Tri-Cities races

The Batavia school board election in April is going to be a hotly contested race, with at least eight people seeking three 4-year seats.

The eight, including incumbents Melanie Impastato and Cathy Dremel, filed their petitions first thing Monday morning at the Kane County clerk's office.

The others running are Ellen Knautz, Ron Rechenmacher, John Dryden, Michele Olache, Bill Gabriel and Christopher Lowe. All live in Batavia.

Petition filing for school board candidates at the clerk's office was a first-time event. Filing concludes Monday.

Rechenmacher is also seeking a 4-year term on the Batavia City Council. He filed petitions for the 6th Ward seat Monday morning, as did Michael Russotto.

Incumbents Dan Chanzit, Susan Stark, Lucy Thelin Atac and Dave Brown filed for re-election to their 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th Ward seats, respectively. Carl Dinwiddie filed for the 1st Ward seat.

In Geneva, former Alderman Jim Radecki wants to return to the city council. He is seeking the 4th Ward seat, along with Eleanor Hamilton. Pat Lenski filed for the 1st Ward seat, and 3rd and 5th Ward Aldermen Dean Kilburg and Craig Maladra, respectively, filed for 4-year terms. Third Ward Alderman Mary Seno filed for the 2-year term to fill the vacancy left by Dawn Vogelsberg. There is also a 2-year term available in the 5th Ward.

In Elburn, incumbents David Gauldoni and William Grabarek submitted petitions. Three 4-year terms are available.

Sugar Grove incumbents Mari Johnson, David Paluch and Kevin Geary filed for three 4-year terms on the village board.

In St. Charles, Ed Bessner is running for re-election to his 5th Ward post, as are 1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato, 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner and 3rd Ward Alderman Todd Bancroft. Steve Gaugel is seeking the 4th Ward position being vacated by Jim Martin.

School boards

Geneva

Taylor Egan, Evelyn Schneider and incumbents Mary Stith and Kelly Nowak filed for three 4-year seats. All live in Geneva.

Burlington

Mitchell Penar of Elgin Township, Janet Marlovits of Campton Township and Laura Rabe of Elgin are running for the Central District 101 school board.

Kaneland

Ryan Kerry of Elburn, Dan Nagel and Jerry Elliott of Sugar Grove Township and incumbents Peter Lopatin of Sugar Grove, Tony Valente of Sugar Grove and Gale Pavlak of Elburn filed for four 4-year terms for Kaneland Unit District 302.

St. Charles

Incumbent Kathy Hewell of St. Charles filed for one of the three 4-year seats.

Elgin Area U-46

Jeanette Ward of West Chicago, Phil Costello of Bartlett, Cody Holt of Elgin, Larry Bury of Bartlett, Arisleyda Taylor of Streamwood and incumbent Jennifer Shroder of Elgin filed for the four 4-year terms on the Elgin Area School District U-46 school board. A 2-year term is also available.

District 300

Incumbents Joe Stevens of Dundee Township and Steve Fiorentino of Algonquin Township filed for re-election to Hampshire-based Community Unit District 300. There are four 2-year terms available.

For the school board candidates who filed simultaneously Monday, the clerk's office will conduct a lottery to determine ballot order for each race. The lottery is at 10 a.m. Friday.
