llinois man gets 7 years in fatal overdose case

ROCK ISLAND - An East Moline man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for providing heroin that caused a man's fatal overdose.

The Rock Island Argus reports 26-year-old Jamil Steward was sentenced this week after entering an Alford plea to unlawful delivery of heroin. An Alford plea doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors likely can prove the charges.

Steward provided heroin in October 2013 that caused the death of 26-year-old Michael Reid.

Steward initially faced a higher charge of drug-induced homicide but prosecutors reduced the charge in a plea deal. He will receive drug treatment and serve two years of supervised release once he leaves prison.
