More trustee candidates announce campaigns in Wauconda, bringing total to 8

Eight candidates - including four incumbents - now have announced plans to run for seats on the Wauconda village board next year.

They're also splitting into two distinct camps.

Trustees and longtime board allies Linda Starkey, Chuck Black and Ken Arnswald will seek re-election in April. Trustee Joseph Coster, who was appointed to fill a vacancy earlier this month, also will run.

So will political newcomers Carrie Serres and Jason Anderson and Wauconda Park District Trustee Bob Cook.

They join local volunteer Tim Howe as candidates for the board. Howe announced his candidacy earlier in the week.

Three seats with 4-year terms and one seat with a 2-year term will be on the April 7 ballot.

Coster and Howe said they'll compete for the 2-year seat.

Coster said he, Cook, Serres and Anderson will run together as the For Wauconda slate.

The other four candidates will run as the United For Progress team, according to a news release issued Thursday afternoon.

Arnswald, who joined the board in 2011, said he's running again to continue the projects the board has started in the last four years. There have been some big ones, particularly the $50 million plan to bring Lake Michigan drinking water to town.

"In the last four years we've gotten some good programs initiated and I just want to follow through," he said.

Of the rival team's four members, Cook has the most political experience. He's been a park district trustee for eight years and has served as the leader of the Lake County Republican Party for four years.

Cook said he won't seek re-election to the park board next year.

Wauconda has been deeply divided politically, with some people supporting Mayor Frank Bart and others siding with the trustees on a variety of issues.

Cook said he's not taking sides.

"I just want the trustees to show up at meetings, act like adults and do what's best for Wauconda," he said. "I can work with anybody, and that's my goal."

The filing period for April's consolidated election is Dec. 15-22.
