Probation in Batavia fight where toddler pepper sprayed

Two Aurora women recently pleaded guilty to reduced charges for their role in a fight at a Batavia apartment complex in June 2014 in which police said a toddler was hit with pepper spray.

Christina A. Santiago, 24, and Shaumere L. Causey, 20, both of the 1600 block of Grove Street, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery last month and were sentenced to 18 months probation, 100 hours of community service and nearly $1,500 in fines and fees, according to Kane County court records.

They were both charged with felonious aggravated battery and mob action, the most serious of which carried a top prison term of five years if convicted.

Santiago and Causey both spent two days in jail before posting bond and can be resentenced to up to a year in jail if they violate probation.

Kane County Judge Clint Hull accepted the plea in which prosecutors dismissed the most severe charges.

According to Batavia police, authorities were called to an apartment complex on the 1300 block of East Wilson Street for a fight. Police said insults traded over Facebook preceded the fight, in which Santiago was accused of threatening a 29-year-old man and 20-year-old woman with a baseball bat, at one point swinging and missing.

Causey was accused of hitting the man, woman and a 2-year-old with pepper spray.

No serious injuries were reported, police said.
