New Kane Sheriff Kramer follows lifelong mentor: His dad

A new era began at the Kane County Sheriff's office Monday when Donald Kramer took the oath of office, following in the footsteps of his father, who served Kane Sheriff from 1978 through 1986.

"It's a big step for me and my family," Kramer, a Geneva Republican, said afterward.

"The sheriff's office is a huge responsibility."

Kramer, a former lieutenant at the sheriff's office, defeated Democrat Willie Mayes Sr. last month to secure a 4-year term.

Pat Perez, an Aurora Democrat who held the post for eight years and defeated Kramer four years ago, decided not to seek another term.

Kramer, along with 13 Kane County Board members, took the oath of office in Geneva with Kane County Chief Judge Judith Brawka administering it.

Making Monday more sweeter and meaningful was the presence of George Kramer, 81, who also took a tour of the sheriff's office with his son afterward.

"He just put his arm around me and told me he was proud of me. He had a tear in his eye," Donald Kramer said. "He's been my mentor my whole life. I know right from wrong because my father taught me that."
