Objection filed to Naperville mayoral candidate Dubiel's residency

An objection has been filed with the Naperville city clerk's office to the mayoral candidacy of Matthew Dubiel on the grounds that he does not live in Naperville.

City council member Robert Fieseler, who is not running for re-election, filed the objection at 10:18 a.m. Monday.

"I'm hoping that the candidate himself will recognize it was a mistake in thinking he was qualified," Fieseler said about Dubiel, who listed the unincorporated Will County address of 23156 Joyce Lane, Naperville, on the nominating petitions he filed last week. "You just can't represent an area in a municipal capacity that you're not part of."

Dubiel, a 38-year-old radio station owner, has not responded to questions about his candidacy or his residency. He said he would be available to talk Dec. 8 and directed questions to his campaign website.

Fieseler included with his objection documents from the Will County supervisor of assessments, the Will County tax collector and the city of Naperville's planning and zoning department, all of which he says prove the address Dubiel listed is in unincorporated Will County, not within Naperville's municipal boundaries.

Others have until Wednesday to file objections with the Naperville city clerk's office. The clerk then will convene the Naperville electoral board to hold a hearing about the challenge to Dubiel's candidacy.

If Dubiel remains on the ballot, there will be five candidates for Naperville mayor, which would require a primary Feb. 24 to knock one candidate off the ballot before the April 7 general election. If Dubiel does not remain on the ballot, a primary will not be necessary.
