Construction worker hurt on Fox River

A construction worker on a barge on the Fox River was critically injured Monday morning by a crane component weighing thousands of pounds, Elgin fire officials said.

The 51-year-old man was pinned under the crane at about 9:30 a.m. underneath I-90 at Duncan Avenue, fire officials said in a news release.

Firefighters were able to extricate the worker and advanced life support was administered on the way to Advocate Sherman Hospital, fire officials said. He was then flown to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
