DuPage County Board candidates seek to fill McBride's term

DuPage County residents Saturday had a chance to hear from eight finalists seeking to replace the late Jerry "JR" McBride on the DuPage County Board.

The finalists are Michelle Moore of Wheaton, Mark Pfefferman of Glen Ellyn, Karyn Romano of Glen Ellyn, Timothy Elliott of Glen Ellyn, Catherine Galvin of Glen Ellyn, Robert Gans of Glen Ellyn, Lawrence Lavanway of Glen Ellyn and Alan Bolds of Wheaton.

"I am pleased by the amount of interest from the community to serve on the county board," said county board Chairman Dan Cronin. "We were fortunate to have eight very talented community leaders who offered insight about how they would work together to advance our mission for a smarter, more efficient form of government. Today's forum was extremely informative and will help us choose the right candidate to represent District 4 residents on the county board."

But not everyone attending the forum, which drew about 20 residents, felt their questions were answered.

"When I hear the questions being asked, these candidates are not answering these questions directly," said Paula McGowen of Glen Ellyn. "They are avoiding the direct questions. They're talking about smaller government, (but) not one of them said what they want to do in the future about cutting to a smaller government."

Cronin reviewed applications from 34 candidates interested in the District 4 board seat that's been vacant since McBride's death on Oct. 24. The forum gave candidates the chance to make pitches for why they should represent District 4 for the remainder of McBride's term, which expires Nov. 30, 2016. It was held at the county's administration building in Wheaton.

Cronin said he is planning to name his choice in time for the full county board to take a Dec. 9 vote on the appointment.

District 4 includes all or parts of Addison, Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Lisle, Lombard, Wheaton and Winfield.
