Schaumburg library offers low-cost computer programs

By Susan Miura

From paying bills to researching to connecting with friends and family, computers simplify our lives and provide a world of information at our fingertips. And the more you learn, the more that world expands. Whether you have never touched a keyboard, or want to enhance your skills to include Photoshop, Excel, Access or PowerPoint, sign up for a class at the Schaumburg Township District Library. You can even learn to create your own website. Classes are just two hours each and cost $12 for Schaumburg Township residents, $17 for nonresidents, and $9 for seniors (anyone older than 50 years old).

Choosing your classes and signing up is easy. Simply look at the library's Program Guide, whether it's the hard copy you receive in the mail, or the online version at www.schaumburglibrary.org. There you will find a list of classes and the order in which they should be taken. If you're a senior and have never used a computer, sign up for the "Basics" class in which you will learn to use the mouse and keyboard, as well as understand the major parts of a computer. From there you can learn to use email, create useful charts on Excel, peruse the Internet, and create documents in Word.

For those who already have computer skills varying from basic to comprehensive, the library offers classes to help you learn various types of software. Additionally, you can acquire helpful information for purchasing a computer or digital camera. If you are out of your comfort zone when using an Android phone or iPad, come to classes where instructors will demonstrate how to easily navigate your device, download apps, organize screens and more. You'll leave the class feeling empowered by your newfound knowledge.

Library computer classes are taught by trained, professional instructors who are proficient in the subjects they teach. They are also patient, and will happily answer questions and repeat instructions when necessary during these hands-on classes. The goal is for participants to leave with a comfortable, working knowledge of the programs or skills they set out to learn.

Computer classes at the library provide an overview of programs and are open to anyone high school age and above. They meet in the Adult Computer Lab on the library's second floor. Registration can take place at the Computer Assistance Desk with cash, check or a credit card; or by calling (847) 923-3352 and paying with a credit card. USB drives, which are required for Word classes, may be purchased at the Computer Assistance Desk or brought to class.

Ready to expand your world? Come to computer classes at the Schaumburg Township District Library. In just two hours, you will come away with newfound skills to make your life easier, help you stay in touch with friends and family, manage your finances, conduct research, and so much more.
