Pedestrian dies after being hit by car in Mundelein

A pedestrian who was struck by a car in Mundelein died early Monday, authorities said.

The man was identified by Mundelein police as Arturo Carranza, 72, of the Mundelein area.

Carranza wasn't carrying identification when he was fatally injured, but officers recognized him from previous encounters, Police Chief Eric Guenther said.

The accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. Sunday on Route 45 near Ridge Avenue.

Carranza was standing on the median, then stepped into the roadway, where he was hit by a northbound Ford Mustang, Guenther said.

Carranza was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he died about 4 a.m. Monday.

Charges aren't expected to be filed against the driver, who wasn't hurt and cooperated with police, Guenther said.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team is assisting Mundelein police with the investigation.
