Ex-Gavin teacher turns himself in on failure to report abuse charges

The third teacher charged with failure to report suspected child abuse in the Gavin South Middle School molestation case turned himself in Sunday, officials said Monday.

Arrest warrants went out Thursday for John Keehan, 40, of Elgin, and two other teachers accused of failing to report the molestation of a student by, authorities say, teacher Michael Vucic, 41, of Lake Forest.

April Courtney, 34, of Wauconda, and Michael Lanners, 38, of Lake Villa, both turned themselves in last Thursday, a news release from the Lake County state's attorney's office said, but Keehan's whereabouts had been unknown.

He posted $5,000 bond and was released Sunday evening.

The abuse was reported in August by a victim who told her grandparents she had sexual contact with Vucic several times in 2012. Two more victims have come forward since.

Vucic is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, and sexual assault. He fled to Europe three days before charges were filed in August, police said. He was arrested Sept. 15 in Bosnia-Herzegovina and is fighting extradition.

Since then, District 37 fired Vucic, Keehan and Courtney. Two others have been suspended pending an investigation.

Lanners, a former Gavin South teacher, has been teaching in Mundelein Elementary District 75 since 2002. Authorities have not explained how Lanners knew or suspected that Vucic was abusing a student, since he hadn't worked at Gavin for at least 10 years.

Mundelein District 75 has put Lanners on unpaid administrative leave.
