Suspicious fires damage trash cans at Vernon Hills parks

The Vernon Hills Park District is asking residents to be aware of suspicious activity in parks after a series of small fires the past three weeks destroyed trash receptacles.

Four containers have been destroyed at Deerpath Park, east of Phillip Road between Deerpath Drive and Route 45; one at Kelli Garvanian Park immediately to the south; and one at Augusta Park, on Augusta Drive east of Aspen Drive, according to Executive Director Jeff Fougerousse.

Police said the fires have been occurring since Oct. 22, with the most recent set shortly after midnight Wednesday.

"They're not inexpensive. They're about $450 apiece. They're nice, decorative cans," Fougerousse said.

Some nearby lights and the concrete pads on which the cans sit also have been damaged. No injuries have been reported.

"Some are attached to path lights, some are attached to trees. The concern is more serious fires could take place," Fougerousse said.

Police and fire officials are investigating. Police said residents whose homes border or sit near a park or a park path may have seen someone or may see someone in the future. Anyone with information should call the investigation section (847) 362-4449, or 911 if they see something in progress.
