Autopsy results in for man killed in stand off at hospital

Preliminary autopsy results showed an armed Waukegan man died from a gunshot wound suffered during a standoff with police inside NorthShore Highland Park Hospital, but Lake County Coroner officials would not release any other details.

Lake County Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo would not provide the number of gunshot wounds or location of the gunshot that killed Christopher M. Anderson, 27, at 1:30 a.m. Monday during the confrontation in the hospital.

Portillo said after the Tuesday autopsy the preliminary cause of the death is "a gunshot wound." He said pathologists are awaiting toxicology reports before determining a final cause of death. That could take up to two weeks, he said.

Authorities said police officers were called to the hospital emergency room after Anderson became "aggressive" with staff members and pulled out a gun. Two officers fired at Anderson when he refused to drop the weapon, authorities said. No one else was hurt in the shooting.

Anderson was hit several times, and medical staff members unsuccessfully tried to save his life, authorities said.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation into the shooting.

George Filenko, chief of the major crimes task force, would not comment Tuesday on the motive behind Anderson's aggression. He also would not say how the weapon was brought into the emergency room or where it came from.

Filenko said task force members conducted interviews Tuesday and will continue Wednesday.

Anderson was not under arrest when he arrived at the hospital, Filenko said. Anderson and his 9-year-old daughter, Alaysia, were taken there to treat injuries suffered in a car accident about 11 p.m. Sunday on I-94 near Lake-Cook Road, authorities said. They were passengers in the car involved in the crash, authorities said.

Illinois State Police arrested the driver - George A. Moore, 30, of Chicago - on charges of driving under the influence, improper lane usage, driving with open alcohol, child endangerment, and driving with a suspended license.

Alaysia Anderson later was released from the hospital to a relative.

Highland Park authorities have not released the name of the two officers involved.
