Elk Grove Village museum celebrates Native American heritage

Nino Romeo pounded the colorful kernels into a hollow tree stump.

With only some tips from an onlooker, the Roselle 10-year-old learned how to make cornmeal from scratch Saturday during Native American Day at the Elk Grove Historical Museum.

It was a celebration of Native American heritage, with games for kids and demonstrations teaching visitors how to start fires and fashion corn husk dolls.

With the sound of leaves crunching under their feet, Elk Grove Village siblings, Sophia Chi, 7, and her brother Damian, 5, ran around playing double ball, a traditional Native American game.

Other children took part in ring and pin and t'wis, said Bokeum Audrey Ko, the museum's coordinator.

All together, there were five demonstration areas outdoors.
