27.0 average leads ACT performance in DuPage

With average ACT scores as high as 27.0, several DuPage County high schools shined on standardized tests.

Hinsdale Central led the way with an average ACT score of 27.0 among students who took the test this spring, while students at Naperville Central averaged a 25.2, and those at both Naperville North and Neuqua Valley high schools compiled an average score of 25.0.

Addison Trail High School, West Chicago Community High School and Glenbard East High School fared among the worst in DuPage County, recording ACT averages of 19.5, 19.6 and 20.1, respectively.

ACT scores were listed as part of school report card data released today by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The scores also shed light on high schools showing the biggest increases in students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading, math and science, and conversely, on which schools showed the largest decreases.

Metea Valley High School in Aurora saw increases in the percent of students who meet or exceed benchmarks in all three subjects, finishing with 77.6 percent of students meeting reading standards, 74.9 percent meeting math standards and 73.4 percent meeting science standards.

Also showing improvement in one or multiple subjects were Glenbard North, which saw a higher percentage of students - 63.6 - meet reading standards than in the past; Glenbard East, which improved its percentage of students meeting math standards to 55.1 percent; and Neuqua Valley, where 87.3 percent of students now meet or exceed science standards.

Among schools that saw a smaller percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards were Glenbard South, where reading and science performance decreased to 65.6 percent and 64.6 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards, respectively, and West Aurora, where math and science performance dropped to 37.5 percent of students meeting math standards and 31.5 percent meeting science benchmarks.
