Trial delayed for Glencoe man involved in Lincolnshire crash that killed Wheeling woman

The trial for a man accused of driving while intoxicated during a crash in Lincolnshire that killed a Wheeling woman was delayed Monday due to medical issues, authorities said.

John S. Warsaw, 66, of the 1100 block of Carol Lane in Glencoe, was unable to attend his trial because he is in a long-term medical facility, said Cynthia Vargas, spokeswoman for the Lake County state's attorney's office.

Jury selection was scheduled to begin Monday in front of Judge James K Booras, Vargas said, but defense attorney Donald Morrison requested the delay.

The trial was postponed until Feb 2, Vargas said. Both sides are due in court Dec. 1.

Warsaw faces multiple counts of aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, aggravated DUI resulting in great bodily harm and reckless homicide in the Jan. 13, 2012, crash that killed Shruti Phandis, 26, of Wheeling.

According to authorities, witnesses said Warsaw was traveling on Route 22 when his car drove into a ditch, struck a street sign and hit the median in Buffalo Grove. After turning onto southbound Route 21 and entering Lincolnshire, Warsaw's Honda crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla in which Phandis was a passenger, authorities said. Other vehicle occupants were injured.

Warsaw is free on bail.
