Birds saved in Algonquin house fire

Firefighters were able to rescue the birds in an Algonquin home when responding to a fire call early Saturday morning, officials said.

At approximately 1:24 a.m., the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District was dispatched for a structure fire in the 1300 block of Lexington Drive. The fire was reported by the homeowner, who escaped without injury.

Firefighters arrived at 1:28 a.m. and found a single-story home with smoke and fire in the basement. Fire crews brought the fire under control within minutes, according to a dire department news release. The fire was declared out at 1:45 a.m. and crews remained on the scene until 3:45 a.m. investigating the cause.

The fire is still under investigation, officials said. No damage estimate is available.

The Huntley Fire Protection District, Carpentersville Fire Department, Crystal Lake Fire Department and Cary Fire Protection District assisted Algonquin with the fire.
