Naperville walk strives to help end 'puppy mill' cruelty

Dog lovers and their furry friends can head out for a stroll Sunday, Oct. 19, knowing that every step they take will help improve the lives of other puppies.

Miles for the Mothers in the Mills aims to raise awareness of conditions in puppy mills and help end cruel treatment in such facilities. Organized by the Puppy Mill Project, the walk and expo run from noon to 3 p.m. on the Naperville Riverwalk and at the Grand Pavilion, west of Centennial Beach, 500 W. Jackson Ave., Naperville. Registration and check-in begin at 10:30 a.m.

Besides taking part in the walk, pet lovers can learn from an on-site veterinarian, an animal behaviorist and an animal nutritionist who will answer questions, and can talk to representatives from humane pet stores, local shelters and rescue organizations. Participants can enter contests, with prizes awarded for best costume, best pet trick, and best pet/owner look-alikes. Winners of each contest will receive a gift basket.

Proceeds from the walk benefit Millie's Mission, the Puppy Mill Project's rescue fund that helps pay for the veterinary care of rescued mill dogs.

Tickets are $30 per person with up to two pets, free for children 12 and younger. Everyone who registers will receive a T-shirt and a backpack with canine goodies. For information or to register, visit thepuppymillproject.org/napervillepetwalk/.
