Quinn, Rauner to debate on TV tonight

Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican Bruce Rauner will hold their first televised debate tonight.

The two will debate in Peoria in an event that is scheduled to be broadcast at 8 p.m. on WTTW-Channel 11.

The face-to-face meeting isn't their first, but the two bitter rivals will tussle on TV live for the first time. At least two other televised debates are scheduled: one at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, on WBBM-Channel 2 and one at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, on WLS-Channel 7.

Debating on TV gives voters a look at the candidates away from the millions of dollars worth of advertising each has used to promote himself and attack the other.

Quinn is facing tough questions about a 2010 anti-violence program Republicans have accused him of using for political purposes. And Rauner has tried to answer for a record that includes bankrupt companies among those in which his firm invested.

The two candidates have found no shortage of issues to disagree over.

Rauner prevailed in the March GOP primary after a handful of televised debates with his three opponents.

Quinn didn't debate his long-shot challenger in the primary.
