ComEd smart meters coming to Schaumburg

The village of Schaumburg is informing residents that ComEd representatives are scheduled to begin installing smart meters in the Schaumburg area in November as part of a $2.6 billion infrastructure investment to modernize its transmission grid.

A smart meter is a digital electric meter that uses two-way radio communications to collect usage information and securely transmits it to ComEd through a wireless connection.

ComEd will be installing the smart meters at homes throughout 2015. Commercial and industrial meters will be installed beginning in 2015. The installation of all 41,574 meters is scheduled to be completed in September 2015.

ComEd will be sending residents more information in the near future. Residents will not be required to be home if ComEd representatives can access their meters.w
