Streamwood Pumpkinfest back with smashing gourds, wagon rides

For kids, pumpkins are fall's version of your grandma's Christmas ornaments.

Youngsters come across pumpkins as a front-porch accessory. Or maybe in that icky coffee drink the adults are always talking about.

Either way, the gourds are pretty boring.

At Streamwood Park District's Pumpkinfest, though, kids have smashed, hurled (with the help of a trebuchet) and even rolled pumpkins down a mock bowling alley over the years.

The annual event returns from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at Hoosier Grove Park, 700 W. Irving Park Road.

Organizers have planned some unusual activities (search for a penny in the haystack) and some old favorites (take a spin on a tractor-pulled wagon ride).

Participants in the Kiddie Run, geared toward ages 3 to 11, receive a ribbon, T-shirt, and a small pumpkin. Fees are $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents before Sept. 28. On race day, prices are $12 and $18, respectively.
