Ex-business manager for Rosary High gets probation for gambling-related theft
An Aurora man was sentenced Friday to four years probation for stealing more than $45,000 from Rosary High School when he was its business manager.
According to Kane County prosecutors, Kevin J. Carew spent the money on gambling, including trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Carew, 36, of the 2500 block of Dickens Court, also had to repay the money he stole. He did so Friday.
Carew, who pleaded guilty June 5, originally was charged with theft from a school or religious organization, and theft by deception, both felonies. Aurora police said that between June and August of 2012, Carew cashed checks and made unauthorized withdrawals from the school's bank account.
Prosecutors dropped the theft-by-deception charges.
Carew must attend anti-gambling self-help sessions and counseling. He also has to stay out of any place where gambling is the primary pursuit.
School officials said they discovered the improprieties in late August 2013, called Aurora police and fired Carew a few days later. Charges were authorized in February.
"In stealing from a small, religiously affiliated school that seeks to teach its students to be responsible and ethical citizens, Mr. Carew's selfish acts placed an unnecessary burden on Rosary High School," Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said in a news release. "This sort of theft is a major crime that inflicts significant financial and emotional costs on the community as a whole.
